I started in drum
corps with Grantham Police Boys Band around 1957 and marched for 3 years. I'm retired ( ? )
,involved in the community doing what I love, playing music (piano) at local
nursing homes or to any one who will listen. I am married with one son who works
in the music industry. Happy to be here.

I marched with St. Johns Drum and Bugle Corps from 1966-1980 and played soprano for a couple of years and later switched to Mellophone which I loved to play. I became the soloist for St. Johns, playing the "Impossible Dream” solo and the point of the V formation! I ended my junior years as drum major. My whole family was involved in drum corps – my mom (Evelyn Hagan) chaperoned and served on the board, my dad (Tom Hagan) was equipment manager and also served on the board and became the first Corps Director for the Belles of St. Johns Drum and Bugle Corps (feeder corps for St Johns), he passed away while the corps was at the U.S. Open in Marion, Ohio in 1975. My sister (Patty Hagan) played bass drum with St Johns for a couple of years before I joined and my other sister (Gerry) was an avid drum corps fan! I am married to our Corps Director (Ed) which I met after I became assistant horn instructor to Golden Lions 1976. We have two wonderful sons Jim and Sawyer and live in Brantford. I absolutely love Drum Corps!!
Treasurer: Teresa Marinuk-Eller
I am new to this world of drum corps. I joined United Alumni in January 2006. Growing up in Brantford, I had several friends who were involved with St John’s but I was too shy to ever do anything like Drum Corps! For months I saw the sign in a window downtown (Simcoe) and then was prompted by Sharon Faustini to come out and see what it was all about. I did and have enjoyed learning something new, who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? I have met a great group of folks who share the passion of drum corps. My husband Rick is also involved; you will find him bringing up the rear, driving the “pace car” for us in most parades. We have four children, three draughters, one son and two grandchildren. We share our home with Mira our golden retriever, two cats and a bunch of fish.
Corps Director (Corps
Manager):
Ed Pow I originally started playing the tuba in grade 8 at Elgin Avenue Public School in Simcoe and joined Simcoe Golden Lions Drum and Bugle Corps in 1975. Throughout my marching years with Golden Lions I played Contrabass, headed up the members' Corps Committee and later became Corps Director and married one of our horn instructors. Unfortunately Golden Lions disbanded in 1981. In 1998 I joined United Alumni playing of course Contrabass and became Corps Director in fall of 2005. My wife Joy (secretary) and I reside in Brantford and our two children Jim and Sawyer are well on their way to adulthood.

I was a lead soprano player in St. John’s Girls from 1972 – 1978 and a founding member of the Brantford Symphony Youth Orchestra. I followed in my mother’s footsteps. She was a marching member of The Brantford Catholic High School Marching Band in 1957-58 and my cousin Karen joined St. John’s in the early 70’s and I wanted to have fun, just like her. I live in Burford with my husband Paul, daughter Hazel, our dog Sadie and our horse named Gypsy. I was very pleased to join the Board of Directors of The United Alumni and look forward to the years ahead with new friends and old.

I tooted my first horn at the age of 3 – my father had an old Salvation Army coronet at home. At 11, I joined the Simcoe Salvation Army band playing E-flat horn. When I started high school there was a need for French horn players, so I took the challenge. After a couple years with that, I switched to tenor and eventually baritone sax. Loved the sax. After the Simcoe Golden Lions allowed girls in the corps, year 2, I started in the guard, hence my nick name “Newf”. Can you guess which provincial flag I carried? Finally the directors saw the talent of the girls and I became a mellophone player. I have been playing mellophone with United since its inception in 1998, and plan on marching as long as Art Hayward does.
Director: Gary Ferris
I started in drum corps with the Optimist Trumpet band when I was about 12 playing a “tenor” bugle and continued playing with the Royal Blues (French Horn) until we ceased operation in 1968. While in high school, I played the French Horn. I went to the Guelph Royalaires where I started out on French Horn and graduated to mellophone. Drum corps always played an important part when I was younger and it was great to hear that the Alumni Corps had been formed in 1998. Although I was working in North Carolina the first year, United Alumni was one of the first things I looked forward to, when I returned to Canada – good friends, good music and good times! I’m proud to wear our “colours” when we go out and I am happy that the members of the corps have chosen to select me as a member of the Executive of the corps – something which I am more than happy to do in return for the enjoyment I get back from our corps.
