1959 to 1968
Due to increasing costs and the fact that
boys other than Scouts were interested in joining the
Simcoe Boy Scout Trumpet Band the Simcoe Optimist Club took
on the sponsor ship of the band in March of 1959 which continued under
their direction for approximately a year. During that time the Optimist
Club spent a great deal of money on new uniforms for the all boys band. In 1960
Ron Mann, a local businessman, took on the sponsor ship of the local band
adding the name Royal Blues Drum and Bugle Corps. The corps competed
in the Senior B Category winning several championships during their tenure.
The Royal Blues folded in 1968. In February of 1969 the Simcoe Lions
Club assumed the debts and the sponsorship of the corps changing the name to
the Golden Lions.
This photo was recently provided by Cathy
Wheeler Griffis daughter of Harold L Wheeler (center in the photo)
Mr. Wheeler was the Band Manager of the
Simcoe Boy Scout Trumpet Band. It's believed this photo was taken
approximately 1959 it shows two other
individuals (boy on the right is believed to be the drum major
as his uniform is white) and another
gentleman on the left are both dressed in the new Optimist Trumpet Band
uniform.
